Report October 2010 - A NEW ‘HOPE’

Dear Friends,

HOPE Worldwide Jodhpur has a simple mission -

Children are the future of this country. Education is the tool with which they can gain understanding, develop their talents, and contribute to the growth of this great nation. Unfortunately, due to poverty, many bright young people are never given the opportunity to learn and attend school. Government schools in rural and urban areas of India are resource strapped, and do not offer effective education.

At HOPE worldwide we strive to bridge the gap between the underprivileged youngsters and the “New India”, the India of young people with a dream in their eyes, the India that is fast becoming competitive with the rest of the world. We place a lot of importance on spoken English, computer skills, and life skills.

Our goal is to prepare young people to face the world as responsible, confident contributors, able to support themselves and their families, and as individuals who in turn care enough to give something back.’

HOPE worldwide Jodhpur with its limited staff and support has been trying to provide the best service in its three partner government schools and their surrounding communities. The students at Maderna colony, Jodhpur and Police line, Pali are being trained on MS-Office, life skills, spoken English and Azim Premji Foundation’s (APF) educational CD’s. Our two new achievements in the month of October :

1. We started FREE TUITION at government secondary school Police line, Jodhpur. Nineteen students enrolled.

2. We started conducting English classes, teaching English action songs and English interactive games for students at Rajiv Gandhi Kachi Basti government middle school, Jodhpur.

Now bringing HOPE in Rajiv Gandhi Kachi Basti government middle school

School Background:

This government school is located in the midst of a slum of over 5000 people, mostly rag pickers and daily wage labourers. The school has over 300 students. The headmaster of the school Mr. Sayad Ikram Ali expressed that he does not want the students to be burdened by their studies but rather enjoy them. He genuinely wants the HOPE staff to start something at the school. When we proposed to conduct English classes at the school he was very happy and willing to provide all possible support. He personally came for our session and started following the action songs. He is happy and confident of our play way teaching methodology. Above all the students were happy and all excited about the class and they look forward to the staff taking their class.

Computer brings ‘HOPE’ for Govt. Schools

(Inauguration of two computer labs by Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, MP Rajya Sabha)

Dear Friends,

On 13th November 2010, Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi (Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha) inaugurated the computer learning centers at two government secondary schools – Maderna Colony and Police Line in Jodhpur. Both the computer labs set up cost was funded by Member of Parliament Local Area Development funds. It was a big day for HOPE Worldwide – Rajasthan. We waited for this day for almost two years. Our staff efforts, hard work and partnership with two Jodhpur government schools finally brought “HOPE” for these school students and local youth.

Each fully equipped air conditioned computer lab has eleven computers - along with software, 4-in-1 printer and over one hundred interactive educational CDs. HOPE worldwide - India will teach computer and personality development skills to all the school students free of cost. These computer labs will directly benefit around 200 and 350 students at Police line and Maderna Govt. Schools respectively. At the same time local youth will also enjoy the use of the labs.

The HOPE staff, school staff and students were so excited and happy to see the computer labs inaugurated. All the students of the school are all excited to learn skills they otherwise could not have afforded.

Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Education and health are two areas which can make the foundation of our country stronger. These centers will transform the lives of these children and build the future India.”
