SALMAN’S NEW HOPE

Salman (15) is the first in his family of nine members to reach 10^th grade. His father is a painter and daily wage earner, who finds it hard to make the ends meet. Salman decided to pursue the same profession like his father to support his family until last month that he chose to learn computers at the HOPE computer lab in Maderna Colony Govt. School. He is very ambitious and quick leaner and one day desires to have a better earning job. Salman is thankful to HOPE for giving him opportunity to learn computer skills for free.

This month's exciting event was teaching computers – MS office to the 8^th 9^th  & 10^th grade student & interactive competency skills training through Azim Premji Foundation (APF) CDs  to 6^th  & 7^th grade students of Govt. School Maderna colony, Jodhpur.

In July 2010, 46 youth are learning DCA - MS office skill at Pali Computer training center. We had to shift the morning youth batches to afternoon because the school had started after the summer vacation. Our priority is to provide computer education to the school students during the school hours, this resulted in dropout of 16 youth students as they were not able to continue the batch in the afternoon. We will continually follow up to help them complete the course.

SWATI SINGH – Refreshed HOPE

At 16, Swati Singh was forced to leave her studies to get married. Unfortunately, she got divorced after three months of marriage. Swati went into depression due to the events in her life. Later, she joined back her studies and recently passed her 12^th through distance education. Now Swati works as a teacher in a local school.  She heard about the HOPE computer training center through her friends. She enrolled herself for spoken English training and computer skills. LEELA - An Opportunistic

Leela lives in a joint family. Leela’s in laws are very restrictive of her going out. Though a graduate, she had to convince them to join the summer camp to learn tailoring course offered by other NGO. As she came to learn these skills, she learnt about the HOPE computer training center (Pali) and enrolled for Computer and spoken English course. She took this opportunity to get acquainted with these skills to pursue her dream to be a Teacher. Leela is very grateful to HOPE for organizing the summer camp.

2010 - SUMMER CAMP UPDATE

HOPE worldwide organized summer camp at Pali and Maderna Colony schools. The main focus of this camp was to provide school children an opportunity to use their summer vacation in a way where they are learning and developing new skills. At the same time the youth batches on MS Office and Personality Development Skills were also progressing at both the above locations.

A Short two week - summer camp was organized for the student of Govt. Secondary School, Policeline, Jodhpur. In the camp students got an opportunity to interact and get trained on Frizbee (Flying Disc) Sport and Maths problems by Mr Andrew Lorimer (Australian volunteer), a professional mathematics and sport’s teacher. Great enthusiasm and commitment was seen in the students through out the camp.

DURATION OF THE CAMP: 18^th May to June 26^th 2010.

Main activities at Madern Colony School: Spoken English Classes, General Knowledge, English Action Songs and Poems, Interactive Games, Craft activities.

Main activities of the camp at Pali: Spoken English, General Knowledge, Personality Development Skills and Computer skills.

Dear Friends, It is nice to see that all our staff efforts with the Govt. of Rajasthan and our partnership with the three Government Schools are finally reaping harvest. The school students and the youth are so excited to receive MS office skill training at HOPE worldwide computer labs.

For the month of June 2010, we had 66 youth enrolled and are receiving DCA - MS office skill at Pali and Maderna Computer training center.

The below is the school strength of the three Govt Schools. We are working with the school administration to see that every class gets at least five periods(40 minutes each) a month to get trained on the computer. In this way, we will be able to directly impact 819 secondary students for the academic year 2010-11. These classes are conducted FREE of cost and we are not charging any fees.

Now in Chittorgarh District - Bringing HOPE.... Changing Lives...

Chittorgarh is a city in the state of Rajasthan in North West India. It lies on the Berach River, a tributary of the Banas, and is the administrative headquarters of Chittorgarh District and a former capital of the Sisodia clans of Rajputs of Mewar. Fiercely independent, the fort of Chittor was under siege thrice.

Chittorgarh is the epitome of Chattari Rajput (Indian warrior caste) pride, romance and spirit.   The people of Chittor always chose death before surrendering to anyone. It resonates with history of heroism and sacrifice that is evident from the tales still sung by the bards of Rajasthan. Though it can now be called a ruined citadel there is much more to this huge fort. It is a symbol of  all  that was brave, true, and noble in the glorious Rajput  tradition. Historically, it is considered that Chittor was built by the Maurya dynasty in the 7th century AD. It was then named Chitrakut after Chitrangada  Mori, a Rajput chieftain as inscribed on ancient Mewari coins.

The Chittor fort is one of the largest forts (seven miles long).  It is surrounded by a circular wall which has seven huge gates through which one can enter the main fort area. A must see place for all tourists. As of the 2001  India  census, Chittorgarh had a population of 96,028 with an average literacy rate of 70%.

On 21st June 2010, HOPE worldwide established its office with the intent to work in five remote villages:  Mangrol,  Bhavaliya, Satkanda, Nagri and Acchora.

Our main focus will be:

1)  To provide employability skills training to unemployed youth

2) Supplementing IT education and free tuition in three government schools and

3) To conduct quarterly health and veterinary camps for   the general population. 

We have completed the initial survey. The  locals  have  received  us  with  open arms and are eager to take full benefit  of  these  new  initiatives.  We will keep you posted on the developments.  Please see some of the pictures below taken during the field assessment. Thank you.
